5  Works like a charm!, August 28, 2014

Pros: Ingenious hand-guard design. All-in-one-unit. Reasonably priced.

Summary: The best thing about this mandoline, as far as I'm concerned, is the fact that the hand guard in effect runs on rails, which results in a wonderfully stable, controlled, and safe 'slicing experience'. It's in 2 parts, the bottom half being a clear plastic 'sled' that consists of a 4" wide x 1 " tall plastic cylinder that 'houses' whatever you're cutting, with a hinged guide that slides along a groove in the side of the unit on one side (which isn't clear in the video), while the other side simply slides along the top of unit. The upper half of the hand guard is a regular mandoline food holder with a 3 " wide pressure plate and 4 spikes that impale whatever you're slicing to prevent it from slip-sliding around. And I'm happy to report that this ingenious two part system has so far worked like a charm.

If you need to cut something that's longer or wider than 4", you can (as per the video) simply tilt up the 'sled' where it's hinged so your cucumber, squash, zucchini, etc. is underneath rather than inside the plastic cylinder. I suppose you could use the handle without the sled, as happens with other mandolines I've used, but that's obviously less stable and more hazardous. Plus you'd need to made sure that the pressure plate and/or spikes don't come into contact with the blade.

The other adjustments are pretty straightforward and well explained in the video, so there's no need to go over those, except to point out how nice it is having a totally self-contained unit so you're not having to handle a bunch of scarily sharp blades every time you want to change the kind of cut you're making : straight, waffle, or julienne.

My only minor complaint is that in addition to slices that are approx 1/16" (1mm), 1/8" (3.5mm), just over 3/16" (5.5mm), and just under 5/16", I'd love to be able to cut 3/8" (9.5mm) and 1/2" (12.5 mm) slices as well, but I've yet to find a home-use mandoline that can do that.

Finally, here are the dimensions :

Main body : 14" long x 5 5/8" wide x 2" deep.

Main body inc. knobs and leg : 14" long x 6 1/4" wide x 3" deep (with leg folded underneath unit).

Stainless steel deck : 12" long x 4 1/4" wide.

Height with leg extended : 6".
