| Spaetzle is a German dish of tiny noodles or dumplings made with flour, eggs, water or milk, and salt. Other ingredients such as cheese, onions or nutmeg are often added.
The spaetzle dough is often soft enough to be forced through a spaetzle-maker with large holes. The small pieces of dough are usually boiled, or poached, before being tossed with butter or added to soups and other dishes. The cooked spaetzle can also be pan-fried with a little butter and onions.
Germans often serve spaetzle as a side dish with a sauce or gravy.
