Information About Bamboo:
Why bamboo?
Bamboo is actually a grass that grows to a harvestable height between 3-5 years. Some species grow up to 2 feet per day. After harvesting, bamboo does not require replanting. Bamboo has an extensive root system that continually sends up new shoots, naturally replenishing itself, making it one of the most renewable resources known.
Totally Bamboo's unique bamboo cutting boards are hand crafted using hundreds of tiny laminated bamboo strips. Unlike most other hardwoods, bamboo absorbs very little moisture and consequently does not shrink or swell as much, making it a superior choice of material for cutting boards. It is 16% harder than maple which means less visible knife marks keeping the cutting board looking brand new for years to come. Many people like to use one side for cutting and the other side as a serving tray.
Washing Your Bamboo Cutting Board:
Hand washing with a mild detergent in warm water and periodically wiping with mineral oil to bring out the beautiful grain of the bamboo is recommended; dishwasher use not recommended.
The Color of Bamboo:
Totally Bamboo comes in two colors, light, which is the natural color of the bamboo, and dark, which is a honey color. The dark color is achieved by steaming the bamboo, bringing out the natural sugars, caramelizing it. This color is permanent and will not fade or wash out.
The Grain of Bamboo:
There are three types of grain: vertical grain, flat grain, and end grain. Vertical grain, approximately 1/4" wide, is taken from the side of the split pole. Flat grain, approximatly 5/8" wide, is from the face of the pole. End grain is the cross section of the pole.
