Near & Far
Near & Far is an inspired and personal collection of 120 vegetarian recipes by NY Times writer and James Beard award winner, Heidi Swanson. The cookbook stems from Swanson's extensive travel and her keen eye for foods that exude a strong sense of home and place, whether your home be in Italy, Japan or California. The book is divided into 2 major sections, Near and Far, that are filled with recipes from the author's home in San Francisco and those she's collected in travel journals during her times abroad in Morocco, France, India, Italy, and Japan. The resulting collection, though wonderfully varied in flavors, color and texture, shares a similar nourishing character and a vegetarian approach that is first and foremost simply about authentic, delicious foods. She primes the reader for each section with the pantry items specific to each region, meanwhile subdued, artistic photography of food, places and scenes supply you with context for each place. And the selections themselves freely range from small bites, breakfasts and beverages to soups, salads, condiments and vegetarian mains; there are even a few really tasty cocktails! Try the Pozole Verde, Baked Oatmeal, Sprout Salad, Brown Sugar and Tofu Mushrooms, or the Grilled Porcini. The instruction is crystal clear and the recipes are fairly simple for most cooks. Near & Far is a highly inspirational and well-written book that is also a practical cookbook, full of interesting and flavorful vegetarian selections.
